Crew Manager Development Centre – West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service

We are running a Development Centre to identify individuals with the potential to become influential Crew Managers to help us shape our Service for the future.

The development centre is an opportunity for you to learn more about yourself and gain some comprehensive developmental and motivational feedback to support your career. Each exercise is an opportunity for you to practice and demonstrate the necessary skills for you to become a potential future Crew Manager. It will also give you insight into your areas of strength and highlight areas for development.

To be eligible to apply for the Development Centre you must be a substantive and competent (wholetime or retained) Firefighter who has demonstrated competence against the requirements of the NFCC Firefighter role map.

Development Centre Overview

Stage 1

  • Application – consisting of a CV and the Key Skills Application Form

Stage 2

  • Incident Command Test of Potential (for those who do not hold a Level 1/Initial qualification)
  • Face to face assessments, including prioritisation exercise and interview

Stage 3

  • Candidates notified of outcome and provided with feedback.
  • As posts become available, successful candidates will be notified of applicable posts and invited to a role specific selection process.

Stage 4

  • References
  • Enhanced DBS Check

External candidates only:

  • Fitness assessment
  • Medical

Skills, qualifications and experience

You will be a skilled communicator with the ability to work with a diverse range of people using a variety of engagement methods.

You will be a role model to others, not afraid to challenge behaviour and continually striving for personal and team improvement.

Key Skills:

  1. Ability to lead in an inclusive and supportive manner to ensure effective teamwork in both operational and non-operational activities.
  2. Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  3. Effective time management skills.
  4. Ability to plan, manage resources and problem solve.
  5. Ability to use questioning and analytical skills in order to conduct inspections and investigations.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Substantive and competent Firefighter who has demonstrated competence against the requirements of the NFCC Firefighter role map.
  • Current full UK driving licence (unless you have a valid reason which prohibits you form driving).

Experience:

  • Demonstrate an understanding and commitment to the core values and the national fire and rescue service leadership framework.
  • A working knowledge of Health and Safety at Work Legislation and its application to the Fire and Rescue Service.
  • Experience of forming positive and strong relationships with partners.
  • Experience of applying relevant information to make appropriate decisions and create practical solutions.
  • Evidence of continued professional development.
