Senior Pensions Team Leader – West Midlands Fire Service

It’s an exciting time to be part of West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS). Our vision is to make the West Midlands safer, stronger, and healthier. Our highly-trained staff aim to deliver the best fire, rescue and risk reduction services which have our communities at heart – helping them to stay safe and to thrive.

WMFS is a dynamic and innovative organisation, committed to fostering leadership excellence and driving organisational success. We are dedicated to empowering our people to be the best version of themselves, and seeking to improve the employee experience through inclusive and equitable workplace practices.

Reporting to the Payroll and Pensions Manager, the senior pensions team leader will play a key role in ensuring that the pensions administration function delivers an excellent experience to employees, retirees, and their families. understand and implement changes to pensions practice so that WMFS remain legislatively compliant

foster an environment for continuous development – ensuring that systems, practices, and processes remain efficient and aligned to legislation

understand pension team performance – celebrating success, and escalating concerns, where appropriate.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

experience in a pension practitioner role, preferably within the public sector, with a relevant pension qualification (or working towards)

experience of line managing a team (desirable, but not essential)

ability to interpret and analyse complex data and present information concisely to a variety of audiences

ability to work under pressure against challenging – and often competing – deadlines

excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact with stakeholders at all levels and build credibility quickly

high levels of flexibility and adaptability, with an enthusiastic approach and a ‘can do’ attitude.

In return we offer:

a competitive salary starting at £41,418 per annum

flexible working arrangements

annual leave entitlement of 28 days plus bank holidays

access to Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)

access to Occupational Health and Employee Assistance Programme

free, on-site gym

free, on-site parking

access to ‘blue light’ and Sports and Welfare Club discounts.

To express your interest in this exciting opportunity, you should submit your curriculum vitae alongside a detailed personal statement, outlining your skills and experience in relation to the role as detailed in the job summary.

Closing date for applications is Sunday 2 June 2024. Interviews are likely to take place w/c 17 June 2024.

We welcome applications from all eligible candidates. However, as women and Black and minority ethnic (BAME) employees are currently under-represented in our management roles, we particularly encourage applications from these groups.

West Midlands Fire Service is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults. We expect all of our staff to share this commitment.  The successful candidate will be subject to necessary pre-employment checks including relevant level DBS, qualifications (where applicable), medical clearance, identity and right to work.  All applicants will be required to provide two suitable references.
