General Instructor – Surrey Fire and Rescue Service Learning and Development Department
Salary: £46,707 per annum + 10% enhancement (42-hour week).
Join the Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) Learning and Development department as one of our 18 General Instructors.
Role Overview
You will deliver and support operational training, including Recruits, Specialist Rescue, Live Fire, Incident Command, Projects, IECR, Apprenticeship, and Development. To maintain operational competency, a duty shift at an SFRS station is required monthly.
Eligibility:
We are currently seeking those competent in response firefighting. You are expected to hold:
Instructing/Teaching qualification (PTLLS or Level 3 Award in Education and Training).
Assessor qualification (CAVA or A1).
Internal SFRS staff without these qualifications will be supported to obtain them.
Annual Leave:
28 days (rising to 31 with 5 years’ service) + 8 public holidays.
About the Team
Our Learning and Development team designs, delivers, and assesses training to ensure staff competence in all fire sector-related subjects and vocational education.
Location:
Wray Park Training Centre, Reigate. Training delivery will be required at the centre and SFRS stations.
Responsibilities:
Become multi-skilled, specialising in Incident Command, Live Fire, or Potential Crew Commanders.
Research, develop, and deliver learning materials.
Ensure quality standards for other instructors.
Flexibility for occasional evening and weekend work (10% enhancement provided).
Maintain operational duties at your substantive rank (FF, CC, or WC).
Shortlisting Criteria:
Your application must evidence:
Competency as Firefighter (FF), Crew Commander (CC), or Watch Commander (WC).
Instructing qualification (PTLLS or Level 3 Award).
Assessor qualification (CAVA or A1).
Fire Service instructing experience.
You will maintain your substantive rank, with opportunities for promotion within the Learning and Development team.
Additional Requirements:
Standard DBS Check
Satisfactory medical, fitness assessment, references, and competency review.
Interview:
Shortlisted candidates will deliver a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation on a topic beneficial to Recruit Firefighters.
