Control Room Operator – North West Fire Control

NWFC was established by Fire and Rescue Services in Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, and Cheshire to expertly handle all 999 emergency fire calls in the North West. With ten years of service, we are committed to safeguarding lives through exceptional emergency call handling, resource mobilisation, and incident support, guided by our Code of Ethics.
What We Offer
Your career starts with an intensive 9-week training program led by our experienced trainers, who will support you in mastering the skills required for this essential role. Following training, you’ll join your team under the guidance of a seasoned mentor, gaining practical experience in emergency management, situational awareness and technical systems.
Role Requirements
NWFC operates around the clock, 365 days a year. As a Control Room Operator, you’ll work a rotational shift pattern that includes 12-hour shifts covering days, mids and nights on a 4-on, 4-off schedule.
The Ideal Candidate – Essential Criteria
We are looking for individuals who can keep calm under pressure, make quick, clear decisions, and adapt to changing circumstances. The ideal Control Room Operator will be:
- A skilled communicator with excellent listening abilities and a confident, clear phone manner.
- Digitally proficient with strong data entry skills and the ability to quickly and accurately navigate keyboard tasks (we will test for speed, accuracy, and spelling). Minimum 30 words per minute typing skills
- Team-oriented yet independent, able to collaborate effectively but also make decisions on their own when needed.
- Calm and resilient, able to manage high-stress situations and communicate with clarity in emotionally challenging conditions.
- Flexible, with a positive attitude and the ability to adapt to a variety of shifts and emergency demands.
- Committed to growth, continuously seeking to improve their knowledge and support the development of teammates.
- Minimum age requirement of 18 years old, due to shift patterns and nature of work.
Basic Literacy and Numeracy: Essential for logging incident details accurately and communicating clearly.
