Lead Role name: Prevention Committee Chair

 

Background:

The National Fire Chief’s Council are looking to recruit a dynamic and focused individual to the role of the Prevention Committee Chair.

This role will lead the national prevention work undertaken on behalf of Services across the UK, engaging with portfolio leads, FRSs, the NFCC and key partners to deliver solutions to address various complex prevention issues.

This is an exciting opportunity, supporting Fire Services across the UK to prevent fires and other emergencies. The Prevention Committee aims to promote and support a range of fire service initiatives that tackle social issues and lead to safer, healthier and more resilient communities.

The committee chair is also a member of the NFCC Steering Group which meets six times a year.

 

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Have a strong and consistent voice on the issues around prevention.
  • Support portfolio leads in all matters associated with our Prevention work
  • Actively engage in our multi-agency approach to promote NFCC’s strategy to strengthen the guidance and activity in this area.
  • Proactively drive and support the NFCC calendar of campaigns and events, working with other agencies, in meetings and conferences as may be appropriate.
  • Work with FRS and partners to facilitate the production and updating of relevant guidance, position statements and resources to assist in good practice.
  • Influence and inform the strategic direction of the NFCC, building on the successful work to date
  • Chair each meeting of the Committee, ensuring they are properly conducted in line with the Terms of Reference.

 

The role involves:

  • Leading on matters relating to prevention.
  • Leading on matters of Safeguarding
  • Leading on work related to the Serious Violence Duty
  • Working with relevant external organisations to create, develop and maintain relationships with FRSs at a strategic level.
  • Sharing relevant information and data to deliver wider social and public value.
  • Liaising with agencies and regulators where appropriate to ensure compliance.
  • Identifying opportunities to collaborate with other NFCC Leads on related topics
  • Raising awareness of the risk of harm and associated prevention and protection measures to improve the safety and citizenship of young people.
  • Improving road and water safety and reducing deaths and injuries.

 

We are looking for a Principal Officer who has:

  • Experience of engaging at a national level with multiple stakeholders and the wider industry sector. This includes central government.
  • A good understanding of the current strategy, campaigns and challenges in this area at a local and/or national level.
  • A good understanding of the issues and difference in approach required across the UK’s devolved nations.
  • A track record of establishing and delivering strategic objectives and leading change and improvement in a challenging environment.
  • Previous experience of bringing partners together to achieve a common goal.

 

The Committee Chair is appointed through an open and transparent process and agreed by the NFCC Chair in consultation with the Vice Chairs, who will make a recommendation to the NFCC Council in June 2025.
