Young people from across the fire and rescue service community have been recognised for their teamwork, leadership and resilience after taking part in two inspiring national events celebrating the achievements of Fire Cadets and youth volunteers.
The 2026 Welsh Fire Cadet Challenge marked a significant milestone as it was hosted for the first time at South Wales Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters.
Fire Cadet units from across South Wales took part in a series of practical and team-building activities designed to test their skills, confidence and determination. Throughout the day, cadets impressed organisers, staff and supporters with their enthusiasm, professionalism and willingness to support one another.
The event highlighted the positive impact of the Fire Cadets programme in helping young people develop valuable life skills, build confidence and form lasting friendships.
After a closely fought competition, Bridgend Fire Cadets were crowned champions and presented with the Donna Crossman Memorial Cup.
Meanwhile young people from across Scotland also came together for the first-ever Youth Volunteer Scheme (YVS) National Games.
The event featured a range of practical challenges that allowed volunteers to put their skills into action while developing confidence, teamwork and problem-solving abilities. Participants also had the opportunity to meet fellow volunteers from different services, share experiences and celebrate their achievements.
After attending the YVS National Games NFCC’s Executive Fire Cadet Lead, Lauren Woodward, said:
“The YVS National Games hosted by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) showcased the very best of our youth engagement offer. Every member of the team from SFRS displayed a high level of professionalism and enthusiasm to ensure the young volunteers had the best possible experience.
“The camaraderie between the young people highlights the importance of these schemes. The individual and team performances I witnessed demonstrate a bright future for our volunteers and cadets, with skills and abilities fitting of professional fire and rescue service employees on show across the board.
“It was an excellent and enjoyable day for all who attended. Congratulations to all the teams who took part in this and the Welsh Fire Cadet Challenge for demonstrating outstanding teamwork, commitment and sportsmanship.”
Lauren’s reflections underline the value of youth engagement programmes in developing confidence, teamwork and leadership skills, while helping young people build lasting connections across the fire and rescue service community.
The success of the Welsh and Scottish events comes as UK Fire Cadets prepare for another major national event.
This September, teams from six fire and rescue services will take part in the UK Fire Cadets’ Casualty Care Challenge at the UKRO Festival of Rescue 2026 in Essex. The challenge will see cadets demonstrate their first aid, teamwork and communication skills on a national stage, showcasing the confidence, resilience and leadership qualities developed through the UK Fire Cadets programme.
Together, events such as the Fire Cadet Challenge, the YVS National Games and the UKRO Festival of Rescue highlight the outstanding achievements of young people across the fire and rescue service community and the vital role youth engagement programmes play in developing the next generation of leaders.
