Revised eyesight guidance consultation
Closing Date: 16/12/2025
Consultation Status: Open
Introduction
As part of the NFCC’s ongoing work to establish consistent standards and provide clear guidance on supporting colleagues physical health, we have reviewed and updated the medical entry requirements relating to visual acuity. This work has been led by the NFCC Physical Health/Medical Practitioners Working Group, chaired by Michelle Moore (Occupational Health Manager and Specialist Community Public Health Nurse, Hertfordshire County Council/Fire and Rescue Service). The updated guidance will replace previous versions and is intended to be used alongside the existing NFCC Medical Evidence document, which provides further detail on colour vision, visual defects, eye disease, and outcomes following refractive surgery. A future revision of the colour vision guidance is also planned.
Before publication, we are seeking feedback on the content, format, and clarity of the document. All input will be considered as part of the final revision process. The final version will be published on the NFCC website and adapted to meet accessibility standards, ensuring ease of navigation and usability.
If you would like to prepare your response, you can review the questions in advance. There is also a save and continue function that can be used throughout the consultation so that you can return to your response later and pick up where you left off.
This survey will close the end of the day Tuesday 16 December 2025. If you have any questions, please contact NFCC PCL Hub.
Thank you for taking the time to respond to this consultation.
