Multiple communication bearers
Control Measure Knowledge
Communication bearers transmit data and information between devices, systems and sites, for example between fire control and fire station equipment.
Multiple communication bearers may be used to connect:
- Mobilising equipment
- Mobile data terminals (MDTs)
- Integrated Communications Control System (ICCS)
- Alerts to on-call personnel
Once connected, the devices, systems and sites can exchange data and information, enabling an efficient response
To ensure resilience, it is good practice to provide more than one type of bearer. This means that in the event one of the bearers fails, the system will automatically select an alternative bearer to carry the signal and data.
Communications with resources, which are not at a fire station may be relayed using mobile, messaging systems or satellite networks. This provides greater resilience by spreading the risk of failure and ensuring fire and rescue services can fulfil their duties.
Systems should be configured to alert fire control personnel of bearer failures. Once alerted, fire control personnel may need to consider alternative methods of communication.
