Hydrant Maintenance Technician – Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service
Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service is looking for a Hydrant Maintenance Technician to join our team.
You will be a key member of a small and dedicated hydrant maintenance team, working across Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland. Fire hydrants are a critical component of the water supply infrastructure used in firefighting operations, and ensuring their reliability is essential to the effective delivery of our emergency response services. In this role, you will be responsible for the inspection and routine maintenance of fire hydrants located within the public highway.
The role is based on a 37-hour working week. In addition, you will be required to start early to meet the needs of the team. Also, work four Sunday mornings per year.
This is an active, field-based role requiring you to travel between locations, often working independently in a busy outdoor environment. You will assess the condition and accessibility of fire hydrants, carry out visual checks, and ensure they are fully operational using appropriate equipment. Faults or defects must be identified and reported in line with service procedures. You will also support the delivery of our hydrant inspection programme across both existing infrastructure and new developments throughout the county.
We are looking for a level-headed, enthusiastic, and proactive individual, ideally with previous experience working within or around the public highway. A strong understanding of health and safety is essential, including the ability to assess the risks associated with each working environment. Excellent verbal communication skills are important, as you will be required to liaise professionally with contractors, fire service personnel, and members of the public. Good written communication is also necessary for accurately updating records and reporting defects using our digital Water Management System—full training will be provided. Confidence in the use of hand tools and basic testing equipment is also essential.
This is a challenging but rewarding position that offers the opportunity to develop practical skills, work independently, and contribute directly to the safety of our staff and communities. You will operate a service vehicle, work outdoors, and take pride in maintaining the assets that support our operational effectiveness. If you are ready for a new challenge and want to make a meaningful contribution to public safety, we encourage you to apply.
