Senior Surveyor – West Midlands Fire Service

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Estates Surveyor team in the Facilities Department as Senior Surveyor. This full-time post is based at our Headquarters in Birmingham, Nechells, however frequent travel is required to undertake station visits across 41 sites.

As Senior Surveyor, you will lead the strategic delivery of planned projects and reactive maintenance across the Fire Service estate. You will ensure our operational buildings and residential properties remain safe, compliant, cost-effective, and fit for purpose.

This senior technical leadership role holds full responsibility for governance and delivery of repair and maintenance programmes, financial oversight and budget control, statutory compliance, professional leadership of the Surveying team, and shaping long-term estate strategy, including capital projects and land transactions.

You will deputise for the Head of Estates (Facilities Manager) when required and play a key role in shaping the future of our estate infrastructure.

 

Responsibilities

  • lead, manage, mentor and develop the Surveying Team and associated technical staff
  • control revenue budgets and oversee repair and maintenance of all Authority buildings
  • monitor and authorise orders and invoices, ensuring accurate budget allocation
  • oversee statutory compliance, including gas, water, electrical systems, lifts and plant
  • fulfil obligations under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR 2012), and ensure compliance with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 for in-house projects
  • develop and manage planned preventative maintenance programmes, organise stock condition surveys and life cycle costings
  • oversee Approved Contractors List in collaboration with Procurement
  • provide professional building, mechanical and electrical advice across departments

 

Experience and Skills

Essential

  • significant post-qualification experience in building/construction and project management
  • strong knowledge of building methods, legislation (including CDM and Workplace Regulations)
  • experience preparing specifications, condition surveys, cost estimates and managing JCT contracts
  • budget control and financial management experience
  • experience supervising teams and controlling sectional work
  • asbestos Duty Holder certification (CAR 2012)
  • legionella Responsible Person training
