Deputy Chair for Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee

NFCC are looking to recruit an individual to the role of Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee Deputy Chair. This role will deputise for and support the Chair of the Health Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) Committee.

The Deputy Chair for Health, Safety and Wellbeing will engage closely with other Lead Officers and representatives in the HSW committee structure, FRSs, NFCC hub leads and key partners across the UK on various and complex HSW-related issues.

In recognition of the interconnected nature of agendas and mutually shared interests, the Deputy Chair will also work in close collaboration with relevant Lead Officers in the Operational Preparedness, Response and Resilience (OPRR) Committee and People Culture and Leadership (PCL) Committee.

 

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Have a strong and consistent voice on the issues of health, safety and wellbeing-related matters
  • Actively engage in our multi-agency approach to promote NFCC’s strategy to strengthen the guidance and activity in this area
  • Work with NFCC, FRS and partners to oversee the production and maintenance of relevant guidance, position statements and resources to assist in good practice

 

The role involves:

  • Leading on matters relating to health, safety and wellbeing
  • Deputising for the HSW Committee Chair, along with supporting them with their associated responsibilities and leading on agreed pieces of work
  • Providing strategic-level sponsorship, advice and peer support to the NFCC ORFC and PCL Hubs on HSW-related workstreams
  • Working with relevant external organisations to develop and maintain relationships with FRSs at a strategic level
  • Identify opportunities to collaborate with other NFCC Lead Officers, Hubs, and external partners on related topics
  • By exception, attending and advising the OPRR and PCL Committees on health safety and wellbeing-related policy and strategy to ensure compliance with relevant laws and HSW priorities
  • Advising other NFCC strategic groups and stakeholders on behalf of NFCC, as required e.g., steering group, Chiefs Council, lead government departments/civil servants and ministers

 

We are looking for a strategic leader who:

  • Is in a Chief Fire Officer, Deputy, Assistant Fire Officer or Area Manager role (or equivalent), with lead responsibility for one or more aspects of health, safety and wellbeing in their FRS
  • Has experience of engaging at a regional and/or national level with multiple stakeholders and the wider industry sector.
  • Has a good understanding of health safety and wellbeing-related priorities, and current challenges facing the UKFRS workforce
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of the issues and differences in approach required across the UK’s devolved nations
  • Is a great communicator, who conveys a strong commitment towards health safety and wellbeing-related matters in UKFRS
  • Has previous experience of bringing partners together to achieve a common goalPlease note that this is a voluntary role to be undertaken alongside the ‘day job’ and, as such, applicants should consider their individual and organisation capacity to fulfil the requirements listed above. They must also seek agreement and support from their line manager/appropriate Governance lead.
