International Youth Day 2026: StayWise encourages young people to build resilience and help create safer communities

On International Youth Day (12 August), StayWise is celebrating the important role young people play in creating safer, stronger and more resilient communities by encouraging families, educators and community groups to make use of its free safety education resources. 

This year’s International Youth Day theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations”, recognises that while young people experience different challenges depending on where they live, study and grow up, they share common hopes for safety, opportunity, wellbeing and a positive future. The theme also highlights the resilience, leadership and innovation young people demonstrate every day in their communities.  

StayWise, the National Fire Chiefs Council’s (NFCC) online safety education platform, supports these aspirations by providing trusted, curriculum-linked resources that help children and young people develop practical safety knowledge, critical thinking skills and the confidence to navigate everyday risks. Resources cover topics including fire safety, water safety, road safety, first aid, online safety and emergency preparedness.

“The theme of International Youth Day 2026, ‘Different Contexts, Common Aspirations’, reminds us that while young people’s experiences may differ, they all deserve the knowledge, skills and opportunities needed to thrive safely and confidently. 

“Building resilience is a key part of that journey. By helping children and young people understand risk, make informed decisions and look after themselves and others, we can empower them to play an active role in creating safer communities.  

“StayWise provides engaging, trusted resources that support educators, families and community safety practitioners to have these important conversations and equip young people with skills that can benefit them throughout their lives.”  

Across the UK, young people are already demonstrating resilience, leadership and a commitment to helping others through initiatives such as UK Fire Cadets. The programme provides opportunities for young people to develop confidence, teamwork, communication and practical life skills while learning about community safety and citizenship.  

Like UK Fire Cadets, StayWise supports young people to build the knowledge, confidence and resilience they need to make safe choices, manage risks and contribute positively to their communities.
