Motorcycle Safety
Fire and Rescue Services (FRSs) play a crucial role in keeping people safe on the road. In 2023, FRSs in England attended 31,448 road traffic collision incidents, a notable increase from 27,930 in 2012/13.
As roads become busier, and road use is changing, so too does the complexity and increase of the risks involved. With vehicle technologies and emerging hazards, such as the growing risk of lithium-ion battery fires in e-bikes and e-scooters, the operational burden on FRSs continues to grow. These changes require Fire and Rescue Authorities to adapt their risk planning, prevention work, and post-collision response, accordingly.
Aligned with the NFCC Road Safety Policy Position Statement, evidence-based data informs us that motorcyclists and powered two-wheeler users are one of the most at risk groups for being in a road traffic collision. Despite, the user group representing a small percentage of total road users, they experience a disproportionate high rate in road traffic collisions.
To support fire and rescue services and road safety partners in delivering motorcycle safety and interventions, three engaging animated videos have been developed for FRSs and partners to use. With the aim to promote messaging focused on keeping motorcyclists and powered two-wheeler riders safer on the roads, with factors including protection, visibility and learning.
