Position Summary:

We are seeking a strategic leader within the fire and rescue sector to serve as Vice-Chair for the Data Board as part of the NFCC’s Data, Digital and Technology (DDaT) governance structure.

This voluntary position requires an individual with a good understanding and appreciation of the subject area and a strong focus on leadership. The Vice-Chair will play a crucial role in guiding and championing the work of the Board, promoting the importance of data within the sector. The Data Board has membership that includes subject matter experts and external partners who provide input and advisory support.

The key responsibilities include identifying and shaping sector priorities, providing oversight of delivery across the DDaT Roadmap, and promoting the Board’s work across peer and industry networks.

The Vice-Chair will also sit on the overarching DDaT Committee and relay key updates, research and developments to inform the overall national direction of travel.

The Vice-Chair will be supported by the full time Strategic Data Lead operating within the NFCC DDaT Team. While you will operate as an executive lead, the Strategic Data Lead will be responsible for delivery and will have delegated authority to act on your behalf where required.

 

Responsibilities:

1) Strategic Leadership:

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to the Data Board, ensuring alignment with the organisation’s overall goals and objectives.
  • Chair/Co-Chair Board meetings, and be an executive connection to the DDaT Committee, Steering Group, and Full Council for Data.
  • Collaborate with SME board members to leverage their knowledge and insights, guiding the boards’ decisions and actions.
  • Shape the strategic priorities and identify opportunities to enhance data within the fire and rescue sector.
  • Chair/Co-Chair wider data related boards/groups with partners, as required.
  • Represent DDaT on wider NFCC governance groups, as required.
  • Represent DDaT with external partners, as required.

 

2) Championing and Promotion:

  • Act as a champion for the Data Board and the wider DDaT Committee within the fire and rescue sector and partner organisations.
  • Promote the importance of Data across peer and industry networks, raising awareness of their significance for the sector.
  • Engage with key stakeholders, including senior leaders, to advocate for the adoption of best practices, national products, and advancements in data and technology-related areas.

 

3) Governance and Oversight:

  • Chair/Co-Chair regular Board meetings, fostering productive and collaborative discussions, and ensuring effective governance focused on key priorities.
  • Facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing among Board members and subject matter experts.
  • Monitor the implementation of Board decisions, evaluating their outcomes and promoting accountability.

 

4) Relationship Management:

  • Build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders, including senior leaders within the fire and rescue sector, government agencies, industry experts, and technology partners.
  • Collaborate with other relevant boards, committees, and working groups to promote integration and alignment of data strategies.
  • Working closely with the DDaT Committee Chair and the NFCC DDaT team to shape and deliver on the DDaT strategic roadmap.

 

5) Reporting and Communication:

  • Prepare and present reports on the progress, achievements, and challenges of the Data Board to the DDaT Committee, senior leaders, and other stakeholders.
  • Communicate effectively with Board members, subject matter experts, and stakeholders, ensuring transparent and timely information flow.

 

Requirements:

  • Good understanding of data governance, data architecture, and data security, with an appreciation of the fire and rescue sector’s specific needs.
  • Proven leadership experience, with the ability to inspire and guide strategic initiatives.
  • Excellent communication and networking skills to champion the Boards’ work and promote collaboration across industry networks.
  • Strong organisational and analytical abilities, with a focus on prioritisation and effective decision-making.
  • Availability to commit to two days per month to fulfil the responsibilities of the role, recognising that some periods may require more input that others.
  • Passion for advancing the use of data within the fire and rescue sector.

 

Please note that this role is voluntary and does not include financial compensation, including for travel to DDaT related meetings/events. However, they offer a rewarding opportunity to contribute to the strategic development of the sector and make a significant impact.
