Lead Officer for Waste and Recycling

Background:
National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) is seeking a Lead Officer forĀ Waste and Recycling Management.

This role will chair a working group reporting to the Firefighting Board that reports to the NFCCĀ Operational Preparedness, Response and Resilience (OPRR) committee. TheĀ postholder willĀ be responsible forĀ leading an effective group focused onĀ waste and recycling,Ā driving continuous improvement, promotingĀ collaborationĀ and shaping goodĀ practiceĀ across UK fire and rescue services.

Expectations of a lead officer

  • To be aware of NFCC’s Member Strategy to ensure that work within their lead areaĀ remainsĀ aligned to the principles andĀ objectivesĀ of NFCC
  • To demonstrate NFCC values and follow the Core Code of Ethics
  • To oversee, guide and champion their lead subject area at a national level
  • Represent NFCC,Ā and therefore UK fire and rescue services,Ā as a subject matter adviser whereĀ appropriate; this may include:
  • NFCC meetings
  • External meetings
  • Responding to the media, although any media representation should be pre-agreed with the NFCC Communications Team
  • Maintain a strong understanding of developments within their lead area,Ā including horizonĀ scanning and across related subject areas
  • Ensure that theyĀ maintainĀ good communicationĀ through their NFCC reporting line and throughout any NFCC networks, as appropriate
  • To consult as widely as possible, and asĀ appropriate, if national guidance,Ā positionĀ or perspectiveĀ products areĀ being produced
  • To work alongside NFCC hubs or teams, to ensure clear and consistent messaging for announcements and campaigns

The successful candidate willĀ be requiredĀ to:

  • Lead onĀ allĀ matters relating toĀ Waste and Recycling management
  • UnderstandĀ the UK Waste and Recycling industry
  • Oversee and support the national waste fires tactical advisor’s cadre
  • Demonstrate an ability to strive for continuous improvement for their lead officer area
  • Have a strong and consistent voice on relevant issues
  • Actively engage in a multi-agency approach to promote NFCC’s strategy for their lead officer area
  • Work with fire and rescue services and partners to produce and update relevant products to promote good practice
  • Have a good understanding of the issues and requirements of devolved administrations inĀ theĀ UK
  • ProvideĀ updates toĀ NFCC groups, includingĀ the OPRR CommitteeĀ andĀ other relevant groups where required

 

We are looking for a strategic manager who has:

  • A good understanding of the current strategy, campaigns and challenges in this area at a local and/or national level
  • A good understanding of the issues and difference in approach required across the UK’s devolved nations
  • A great communicator, who has a real passion for Waste and Recycling Management
  • Has previous experience of bringing partners together to achieve a common goal
