The National Fire Chiefs Council is supporting the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service following five firefighters being taken to hospital, one who is in a critical condition.

22 fire appliances attended the fire at a former department store in Edinburgh this morning. A total of 11 fire engines and specialist equipment remain at the scene this evening.

Chair of the National Fire Chiefs Council Mark Hardingham commented: “It is always devastating when firefighters are injured attending incidents. Fires such as this serve to highlight that firefighters are prepared to put themselves at risk every day to save lives and protect property.

“Our thoughts are with the firefighters who have been injured and we hope for a speedy and safe recovery for all of them. I know the service will be supporting their families and colleagues through this difficult time.

“I am in contact with Sottish Fire and Rescue Service and the National Fire Chiefs Council will be offering whatever support and assistance they need.”

Mr Hardingham also thanked all the emergency services who attended and remain at this complex and serious fire.
