Expressions of Interest are invited from UK FRS strategic managers to take on the voluntary role of Domestic Detection Fire Lead.

NFCC has produced a plan to support the development of safer and healthier communities by increasing collaboration with partners on a range of specific activities tailored to jointly identify risk to reduce fire injuries and fatalities in the home. As part of this plan the NFCC has set out a number of actions to further develop and promote the effective use of domestic detection technology to mitigate the risk of domestic dwelling fires. The domestic detection plan for 2023-2024 supports the NFCC strategic commitment to reduce community risk and vulnerability through the promotion of the use of domestic detection.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to become the NFCC lead for Domestic Detection within the NFCC Home Safety Committee, which reports to the NFCC Prevention Committee.

The role is predominately about supporting the work of the NFCC Home Safety Committee which sets out the NFCC approach to achieve a sustained adoption of domestic detection to reduce the severity of domestic dwelling fires by providing guidance to fire and rescue services to strengthen their existing domestic detection strategies. This role will lead in engaging with FRSs and key partners on the complex issue that varies significantly throughout the UK.

The successful candidate will be required:

  • To have a strong and consistent voice on the issues of Domestic Detection.
  • To work closely with the existing NFCC lead for Assistive Technology.
  • To actively engage in our multi-agency approach to promote NFCC strategy to strengthen the guidance and activity in this area.
  • Work with FRSs, smoke detection manufactures, and strategic partners to produce and update relevant guidance and resources to assist in good practice.
  • Be responsible for updating the NFCC Home Safety Committee, the Prevention Committee and its workstreams on current challenges, best practice, and opportunities, all with the overall objectives in this area. This includes the areas of Assistive Technology which is aligned underneath domestic detection.
  • Work closely with NFCC Protection Colleagues in areas of joint responsibility such as supported housing.

We are looking for a strategic manager who has:

  • Experience of engaging at a national level with multiple stakeholders and the wider industry sector.
  • A good understanding of the current sector position on domestic detection at a local and/or national level.
  • A great communicator, who has a real passion for this area of prevention.
  • Experience of working with domestic detection manufactures.
  • Has previous experience of bringing partners together to achieve a common goal.
