NFCC Health & Safety Lead

Expressions of interest are invited from brigade managers, or senior FRS health and safety managers, who are keen to be involved in developing the UK strategy to ensure the health and safety of all fire fighters.

The role will include working closely with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), all FRS’s across the UK and Representative Bodies. The Contaminants project also forms part of this function – an important body of work with a number of academic institutions who are reviewing the physiological effects of firefighting on fire fighters. This is an opportunity to further shape the future working practices and safe systems of work at operational incidents which are already recognised as being amongst the best in the world.

The role sits within the NFCC’s Operational Preparedness Response and Resilience Committee. This opportunity will enable the new NFCC lead to evolve the role whilst also being actively involved in the areas set out below:

  • To act as NFCC’s conduit for all HSE consultations.
  • To act as a sounding board and discussion forum for all health and safety matters whether raised by the NFCC, the HSE, Trade Union Representatives or Members of the Health and Safety Committee.
  • To act as NFCC’s conduit for all research and evaluation in relation to matters of health and safety and issue guidance when necessary.
  • To review significant health and safety events and assess their implications for the UK FRS’s.
  • To receive and disseminate information to and from the regional Health and Safety Committees as appropriate.
  • To advise the NFCC on matters of health and safety as required.
  • To coordinate NFCC’s responsibilities in relation to national operational guidance and generic risk assessments.
  • To liaise with the HSE on all appropriate health and safety matters relating to NFCC or FRS’s, as appropriate.
  • To receive reports from each of the UK FRS regions regarding significant health and safety matters with a view of identifying national trends.
  • To liaise with other NFCC Committees as appropriate.
  • To liaise with the respective Trade Unions.

You will work closely with other NFCC lead officers to ensure the success of the NFCC Committee and their H&S work.
